Press Release: Canvastic Supports the Stimulus Package with Large Discounts

Lafayette, CO April 14, 2009 – Canvastic LLC announces support for the educational technology funding included in the nation’s current stimulus legislation. Canvastic will apply a 50% discount to any purchases made, in any part, with the stimulus package funding. According to eSchool News, April 2009, the stimulus funding is being delivered to school districts nationwide this month. IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) will receive $12.5 billion. EETT (Enhancing Education Through Technology) will receive $270 million. There is other money included for education in the bill however Canvastic is educational software that uniquely supports the vision behind these two specific initiatives.

IDEA is all about supporting individuals with disabilities. Students with different needs require tools that are flexible and adaptive. Canvastic was designed from the ground up to support the idea of Universal Design as an assistive tool in the area of the school publishing process. That is, it can be configured to work with students at all levels of abilities from a pre-school level to advanced. Called “Grows with the user”, this is the signature feature Canvastic. Students and teachers from pre-K to grade 12 use it in an unlimited number of configurations.

EETT is all about integrating 21st century technical tools into educational activities and learning styles today. Technology of all types can enhance any learning process but it is especially well suited for writing, presenting, illustrating, and documenting that learning. Too often our children are forced to use 20th or even 19th century tools in the creation process in school. The stimulus funding could be the catapult for creating a new paradigm in creative activities at school. Canvastic is a publishing powerhouse for students. Learners use it to write, draw, present, and publish. They incorporate images, photographs, and audio into authentic modern documents that enhance and support the learning journey. Content created is printed, posted online, and experienced as multi-media presentations.

The 50% discount on any purchases made, in any part, with the stimulus package funding translates into a school being able to install it on every computer for less than $500. The cost to license it for the school and the students’ homes is less than $1000. States, districts, and other educational support organizations are welcome to apply.

Steve Gandy, a Canvastic LLC, principal said, “We are very pleased to announce this program. Many, many schools have no idea that there are other choices for publishing with their students. They gave up looking years ago because the powers that be never really adapted the toy-like applications for real school use. Schools that are going to use this funding to change how technology is used in the classroom will need tools like Canvastic to do it. Ubiquitous computing is coming to our students and I don’t believe that we want them publishing with office suites designed for business or toys created for entertainment.”

The application process for this funding is simple and quick. Contact Canvastic LLC for details.

Canvastic LLC Launches a Web Version, Canvastic.NET
'Really Simple Easy Page Publishing for Primary Students'

Lafayette, CO December 2, 2008 - Canvastic LLC announces the launch of their first online version of the popular publishing solution for students and teachers called Canvastic.NET. Canvastic version 3.5, is the desktop application for Macintosh and Windows computers. This web application version, .NET, extends the use of Canvastic to any computer anywhere with Internet access and the Adobe Flash plugin installed.

Canvastic.NET (pronounced: CANVASTIC DOT NET) continues and expands on the concept that software tools our students use to publish should be flexible and incredibly easy to use. It loads in just seconds. It is designed for primary students to easily combine their own writing and drawing into attractive, useful published pages. Besides the basic drawing tools and text area there is a feature called "Replay" that displays the student's work in sequence as in a movie. It is engaging and useful. Vince Ardito, the technology coordinator at Mountain View Elementary School outside Denver, said, "Replay gives me dozens of great ideas for useful activities with the younger students. They love it and it is just a click of the mouse." Students can print or save a downloaded JPEG file to preserve their work.
Canvastic.NET was developed for three reasons. First, to draw attention to the brand name and the flagship application, Canvastic. Second, to provide a free alternative for primary students' publishing in schools where budgets for software are non-existent. Steve Gandy, Canvastic LLC partner, said, "So, many teachers have been interested in Canvastic but have told us that there just isn't any money for software in their schools." Finally, Canvastic.NET is also a way around the draconian security policies that are in place in many Windows based schools. Gandy also said, "A lot of teachers tell us that they are not even allowed to download software for trial at all - even if we provide free licenses, pilot programs or assurances of safety. They are restricted to using Microsoft Office for all their students. It is just sad - for us but more importantly for the students."
The plans for Canvastic.NET depend upon its popularity. It will always be available as a free, ad-supported alternative for students and schools everywhere. In the future, ad-free access may be sold as a yearly subscription. Additional features and the customization that is a big part of the desktop application will come as soon as possible.

Canvastic.NET has been successfully tested on Macintosh, Windows, Linux, and Solaris computers using Internet Explorer, Safari, and Firefox browsers. Installing the current version of Flash is recommended for optimal performance.

Any school can continue to pilot the desktop version of Canvastic for up to 60 days on as many computers as desired. See this prior press release for details: www.canvastic.com/news/download/CanvasticFreeOfferPR-070305.pdf

Many school districts still qualify for a free site license for 50% of their schools. See this prior press release for details: www.canvastic.com/news/download/Canvastic_Grants_Licenses_2008.pdf

Canvastic will Grant Huge Licenses to Tech. Savvy School Districts Nationwide

Lafayette, CO March 1, 2008 - Canvastic LLC announces the search for school districts that are technology leaders nationwide. Districts will be awarded licenses of Canvastic version 3 valued from $10K to $200K or more. The company will make the award to any district that meets the qualification criteria. The company will award one unlimited building site license ($949 value) for every two elementary and middle schools in the district. This is a pure gift with no obligation beyond installation of the program. Canvastic LLC feels that these gifts will help the program become more widely known as a great choice in student publishing in K-8.

School District Qualifications:
1. School District must have 20 or more schools.
2. School District must agree to install Canvastic in a timely manner.
3. School District must want to move their younger students beyond using "edutainment" programs or professional office suites for productivity to a real "tool-for-school" publishing application.
4. School District must support the gift by supporting their school level technology leaders during the installation and initial use of the program.

Steve Gandy, a Canvastic LLC, principal said, "We are very pleased to announce this program. Many, many schools have no idea that there are other choices for publishing with their younger students. They gave up looking years ago because the powers that be never really adapted the toy-like applications for real school use. Let's face it, the 'wacky-bomb' does not promote focus in a standards based classroom in my opinion. Neither do any of the variations of professional office suites. Canvastic, on the other hand, has just the tools and functions that young students need for all kinds of publishing. And it can scale itself from a pre-K level to advanced one, and everywhere in-between. Besides giving Canvastic a larger footprint in the market these gifts will hopefully raise the bar for all the software in this genre."

Two districts have already accepted gifts. Calcasieu Parish Schools in Lake Charles, Louisiana received a license valued at $15,000. Mehlville School District in St. Louis, Missouri accepted a gift license valued at $13,000.

To apply for the gift, contact the company and state your interest:

Applications will be accepted throughout 2008.

Quote from Negoponte

Nicholas Negroponte from the One Laptop Per Child project recently said:

"In fact, one of the saddest but most common conditions in elementary school computer labs (when they exist in the developing world), is the children are being trained to use Word, Excel and PowerPoint," Negroponte wrote in an e-mail interview. "I consider that criminal, because children should be making things, communicating, exploring, sharing, not running office automation tools."

We couldn't agree more. However, it is not just the "developing" world! See the whole article here.

Learning.com White paper addresses the need for software that is flexible...

This excerpt from Learning.com's white paper on educational technology supports how Canvastic was designed with flexibility in mind... Click the title above to see the entire white paper.

Technology applications (e.g. software for word processing, presentation, data analysis, etc.) can offer benefits to learners that other, less technology-infused instructional approaches cannot. Three significant advantages involve feedback, environment, and automated personalization. Software-based instruction can deliver immediate, personalized feedback for every student. A rich multimedia environment can engage multiple learning styles and skill levels simultaneously. Furthermore, software allows an educator to tailor instructional materials and assessments to address directly the needs and speeds of individual learners. These characteristics of technology are tied to improved academic achievement, increased motivation, more positive attitudes, and higher selfesteem in K-8 students, according to gold-level studies.

Wong (2001), for example, concluded that timely, rich, and immediate feedback is vital to improving learning and motivation levels. Mathew (1997) found that CD-ROM interactive storybooks enhanced students’ motivation and reading comprehension. Mitchell and Fox (2001) reported similar results with K-1 literacy software.

Gold-level studies suggest that for greatest effectiveness, software design should be open and flexible. This allows teachers to more easily fit use of the software into their curriculum (Brush, Armstrong, Barbrow, & Ulintz, 1999). Similarly, an open design provides students with multiple ways to engage with the content, which leads to increased academic achievement (Matthew, 1997; Mitchell & Fox, 2001). The research also indicates that curriculum design is as important as software design when integrating technology in classrooms (MacArthur, Graham, Schwartz, & Schafer, 1995; Thomas & Hoffmeister, 2002). Notably, gold-level SBR indicates that the use of technology in K-8 classrooms can lead to improved motivation, attitudes, and academic achievement in students, but does not necessarily do so. Learning outcomes seem to be a question of balance: too little technology has scant impact, but too much may overwhelm the educator or confuse students. Variables to consider in finding an effective balance include the age and skill base of students, the subject area, and the experience of the teacher in integrating technology (Laffey, Espinosa, Moore, & Lodree, 2003; Waxman & Huang, 1996). Gold-level studies show that technology integration can lead to improvements in students’ reading, writing, and mathematics skills. Collateral benefits beyond the core function of learning a subject, such as improved computer skills, confidence, and academic motivation, have also been identified (Matthew, 1997; Ross, Hogaboam-Gray, & Honnay, 2001).

Canvastic utililizes "Universal Design" with its scalable interface...

This is a quote pulled from a recent eSchool News article....Click the blog title above for the full article.

"Universal design" is another emerging technology concept garnering attention from the nation's top ed-tech enthusiasts. With the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) slated to take place during the next session of Congress, Raymond Rose, vice president of the Concord Consortium, a nonprofit educational research and development organization based in Concord, Mass., says the pressure is on for schools to begin looking at solutions that meet all students' needs--and not just those with severe disabilities.

Under the concept of universal design, Rose said, technologies are beginning to emerge that can be used for dual purposes--to the benefit of everyone within the school system. The concept, he said, is similar to that of building a wheelchair ramp. Though the ramp is built specifically for students confined to a chair, it can be equally useful for students with temporary ailments--or even those with too much in their hands, who might have difficulty navigating traditional steps.

"Schools need to think about tools that will meet all students' needs," Rose said.

A Great Quote

This was shared by someone signing up for the Canvastic mailing list and seemed to go with our philosphy quite well!

"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more
violent. It takes a touch of genius, and a lot of courage to move in the
opposite direction."- Einstein
